Graig Nettles had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the New York Yankees outscored the
Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings 6 to 4.

The Brewers took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Graig Nettles's two-run single knotted the score and Milwaukee barely escaped into extra innings when the "Babe" grounded out with the bases loaded.

New York came out the victor in the 10th inning. Lou Gehrig got things going when he led off the inning with a single. Mickey Mantle came to the plate and popped a two-run clout over the short right field porch, giving the Yankees the victory and sending the 50,583 home-town fans home happy. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory.

Goose Gossage(1-0) went 1/3 of an inning allowing no runs for the win. Brooks
Kieschnick(0-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He was unable to retire either of the two batters he faced, surrendering 2 runs on 2 hits (one of them the walk-off blast by Mantle) and no walks.

Gorman Thomas had a strange day-two solo homers in his first two at bats, then he left the game due to an injury-after the game, Thomas was placed on the 15 day disabled list. Larry Hisle will be called up to replace Thomas on the roster.
