Jerry Koosman carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Citizen's Bank Park
where the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to
0.

The Mets scored the only run they would need in the first. Edgardo Alfonzo led off the game with a double, and was promptly singled in by Keith Hernandez. The Mets continued to threaten throughout the game, but left 10 men on base and lost two baserunners to outs at the plate (both times, it was Hernandez being erased). The only other run scoring for the Amazins came on a Darryl Strawberry solo homer in the fourth (his first of the year) and an RBI double by Straw in the seventh. Darryl missed a chance for the cycle in the ninth as Richie Ashburn corraled his liner into the right-center gap.

Koosman(1-0) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Philadelphia
hitters. He allowed just 2 hits and no walks in 9 innings while striking out nine i getting the shutout. The left-hander lost his chance for a no-hitter when Jimmy Rollins singled on a bloop to right with one out in the 7th inning, after Koosman had retired the minimum 19 batters through 6 1/3 innings (only a Jose Reyes error in the second kept Kooz from being perfect up to that point, which was then promptly erased when Greg Luzinski tried to steal and overslid the bag). Chuck Klein followed Rollins's no-no breaker with a single of his own, but Koosman squelched the threat by fanning both Mike Schmidt and Ryan Howard.

Robin Roberts(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He struck out 11 batters in 8
innings despite losing the game, adding afterwards "You can't win when you don't score any runs. Koosman was just too much for us today".

'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Koosman. 'I had good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went well. Too bad I couldn't take the no-no all the way, but once that was gone I focused on winning the game'
