Right fielder Darryl Strawberry touched them all and David Cone racked up an
impressive total of 12 strikeouts as the New York Mets swept the
Philadelphia Phillies, winning the fourth game of the series in 10 innings by a score of 4 to 2 at Citizen's Bank Park.

The Mets got going early against Phillie starter Jim Bunning as Edgardo Alfonzo ripped his third home run of the year to left field in the third inning. The solo blast put New York on top, 1-0. Strawberry added his second long ball of the year to right-center in the sixth (also a solo blast) to put the Mets up 2-0.

The Phils were flailing and missing at "Coney's" deliveries all night long, as David wound up with a neat dozen in the K column. Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski fanned three times each and it appeared that Cone would get the Mets' second straight shutout as he took a 2-0 lead into the ninth. But in the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Howard started the action with a leadoff walk. Cone got the "Bull" for his eleventh strikeout and out number one, but Chase Utley then got a hold of one and tied the score with his first home run of the season. After Darren Daulton fanned (the 12th and final K of the night for Cone), pinch hitter Bobby Abreu singled to left to drive Cone from the game. Jesse Orosco relieved Cone to pitch to Richie Ashburn, and the slingshot delivering lefty got "Whitey" on a fly to center to send the tilt into extra innings.

New York won the game in the top of the 10th inning. After Keith Hernandez fanned against reliever Barry Lersch, Cleon Jones started the rally when he delivered a one-base hit. Strawberry was next to the plate, but he also struck out. Todd Hundley then cracked a two-run homer to right-center off a hanging curveball to snap the 2-2 tie. New York banged out 10 hits on the night to 8 for Philadelphia.

The Phils has one last chance in the bottom of the tenth when Chuck Klein singled with one out. Bobby Valentine relieved Orosco at that juncture, bringing in Bob Apodaca to face Schmidt. Schmidt flied out and Howard grounded to Hernandez to end the game.

Orosco(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Apodaca was credited with his 2nd save. Lersch(0-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.

"Sure doesn't feel too good" said Charlie Manuel after the game. "I never like getting beat by these guys, and getting swept in our own backyard by New York is, as far as I'm concerned, an insult. Most of the guys feel the same way and we'll bring it with us to Queens on April 21 (when the Phils come to Shea Stadium for a three game set)".

Valentine, with an ear-to-ear grin, noted "Keep crying Charlie, you better not let us get too far ahead of you". Cone sarcastically stated to the clubhouse attendant, "Here, someone go to the Phillie locker room with this bunch of crying towels-they could use them". Even Piazza was effusive, telling one writer "Dude, we've got one heck of team here. I have a real good feeling about our guys-we can do some really great things if we keep it up".

In a two run game the New York Yankees got by the Milwaukee Brewers by the
score of 7 to 5.

The Yankees broke a 5-5 tie in the eighth inning scoring 2 runs on 3 base hits. After Elston Howard grounded out to start the inning, Roger Maris smashed a pinch hit solo 'big-fly' to put the Yanks in front, 6-5. Willie Randolph stepped into the batter's box and he singled. Dan Plesac came on to relieve Tom Murphy at that point. Derek Jeter then was hit by a pitch. Babe Ruth, perhaps angry over the "Captain" getting nailed by a pitch, "took matters into his own hands" by hitting a grounder to Plesac that was hit so hard, Plesac had to come out of the game (Plesac did manage to get the force at second, then collapsed in pain on the mound). Rollie Fingers came in to try and keep things close, but Lou Gehrig stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single to plate an insurance run. Mickey Mantle, yesterday's extra inning hero, struck out to end the inning. New York rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.

Plesac, it was learned after the game, will go on the 15 day DL with Brian Shouse likely to be called up to be the lefty in the Brewer pen.

The winning pitcher was Lefty Gomez(1-0) who allowed 5 runs in 8 innings.
Mariano Rivera was credited with his 1st save as he set down the Brewers in order in the ninth. Murphy(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits (one of which was the Maris HR) over 2 1/3 innings.

Casey Stengel noted after the game "That's quite a bunch of players I've got there-they really know how to take care of things out there, especially when one of our guys gets hit". Buck Rodgers, none too pleased about losing his lefty relief ace but philosophical, stated "That wasn't done on purpose-Ruth couldn't do that again in 100 attempts if he tried". Babe had the last word about Plesac, adding "I don't try to do those things; pitchers are mad enough at me as it is. I was just glad that we only got one out on the play and set it up for (Gehrig) to drive in the insurance run".

The Pittsburgh Pirates toppled the Birmingham Barons by a 6 to 2 score at
Rickwood Field.

Pittsburgh claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 1 hit. The key offensive moment was provided by Willie Stargell who
quieted the crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his second of the year). Pie Traynor added his own two run homer (also his second of the season) in the fourth inning, and Honus Wagner lined one through a drawn in infield in the seventh to plate the last two Pirate runs. Josh Gibson blasted his second home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth to account for all of Birmingham's scoring. Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Birmingham 9 to 6.

The win was credited to Dock Ellis(1-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2
runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 5 walks (the Pirate defense turned numerous defensive gems behind Ellis, including three double plays). Max Manning(0-1) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 runs (only two earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

First baseman John Olerud had 2 base hits and Pat Hentgen tossed a complete
game shutout as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 5 to 0 at
Fenway Park for their first win of the season.

Hentgen(1-0) gave Toronto a solid outing. He gave up just 6 hits and 2 walks
in 9 innings, but had to labor vigourously all night as he ended the night with 155 pitches thrown. When asked why Hentgen was allowed to expend himself so much, Toronto skipper Cito Gaston noted "I was going to take him out after seven when we only had a 3-0 lead, but when we got the two runs in the eighth, I decided to see if Hentgen could get the shutout". Both teams totaled 6 hits on the night.

Derek Lowe(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing
only 3 hits and 1 walk, but two of those hits left the park (Barfield with a two run homer in the first and Myers with a solo shot in the fifth).

WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Miguel Tejada robbed Willie Wells of a base hit.

One run was the difference at Oakland Co Stadium as the Indianapolis ABC's
defeated the Oakland Athletics 4 to 3.

In the top of the 6th inning Indianapolis went on top for good scoring a
single run on an Oscar Charleston home run. Charleston singled in his next at-bat, but tripped making the turn around first and was forced to leave the game (according to skipper Judy Johnson, Charleston is "day to day" with a sprained ankle). Oakland had a chance in the bottom of the 9th but they came up short, as Rickey Henderson grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the game.

The win was credited to Ray Brown(1-0) who went 8 innings allowing 3 runs.
Jose Mendez got the save, his 1st, by escaping from a bases loades and one out jam. Vida Blue(0-1) took the loss, going the distance for Oakland and allowing 4 runs.

'You have to give Oakland credit, they fought us tough to the end' Judy
Johnson said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the
victory.'

At Tiger Stadium the Detroit Tigers outscored the Chicago White Sox 6 to
3.

Detroit wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning when they tallied
3 runs on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Hank Greenberg
who brought the crowd to their feet when he lifted one out of the park for a
two run home run. Detroit had 11 hits for the afternoon while Chicago had 5.

The winning pitcher was Hal Newhouser(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 2/3
innings. Newhouser got relief help from Willie Hernandez who gained credit
