Johnny Bench smashed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI at Riverfront Stadium as the
Cincinnati Reds, running on all cylinders, ripped the Washington Nationals by
a large 20 to 10 margin.

Bench had a great evening at the plate. He equalled a rare feat by blasting two homeruns in the 2nd inning (a two-run shot off Javier Vasquez and a three-run blast off Butch Henry) and later doubled bringing in a run in the 6th inning. Cincinnati kept the scorekeepers busy in the 2nd nning when they had 9 runs on 7 hits. The Cincinnati offense man-handled the Washington pitching staff as they scored in 7 of their 8 offensive innings. Six different Reds had at least two RBI's, every Reds starter, including the pitcher, scored at least one run and Pete Rose went 5 for 5 with four runs scored. Eric Davis went 4 for 4 and also scored four times.

The victory was credited to Sammy Ellis(1-0) who went 3 innings in relief of Jackson (who had to leave the game in the top of the fourth inning with a muscle pull; he's listed as day-to-day and should be OK for his next start). Javier Vazquez(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He surrendered 8 runs on 8 hits (2 of them homers) and 2 walks in 1 and 2/3 innings. The Reds pounded out six long balls (Rose and Bench two each, Davis and Kluszewski one each) off the beleaguered Nats staff.

Bench was in a good mood but was also introspective after the game, noting 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off. That's what this game is about, making adjustments as the season goes along. If you don't make adjustments, pitchers are going to drive you right out of the game by pounding away at your weaknesses".
