At Pac Bell Park, the San Francisco fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Randy Johnson(1-0) finally bested his San Francisco opposite, Christy
Mathewson(0-1), by the score of 1 to 0.

The game's only run scored in the first. Eric Byrnes led off the game with a single. He then stole second and advanced to third on Dick Dietz's poor throw. Jay Bell then singled him in, giving the D-Backs a 1-0 lead two batters into the game.

Johnson had a strong outing. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits
and 2 walks in 7 and 1/3 innings. Johnson racked up 8 strikeouts. Arizona
managed only 4 hits on the night, but aided the Big Unit and B-H Kim by turning 3 double plays.

Kim got the save (his 1st), primarily by getting out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth by coaxing Fred Lindstrom to hit into a 6-2-3 double play, then fanned the heart of the Giants order (Bonds, Mays, McCovey) in the ninth. Mathewson absorbed the loss. He surrendered only 1 run and 4 hits in 9 innings, but was philosophical about the loss, stating, "Johnson is a tremendous talent who could have pitched in any era and fared very well. I didn't think that first inning run was going to stand up, but Randy did do just that."

Dietz took responsibility for the poor throw, adding "That just may have cost us the game".

Johnson's take on the game? "That was tremendous, pitching against a legend like Christy. I knew I was going to have to be on top of my game; I was just lucky enough to make the one run stand up with B-H's help. It was nice to have Byrnesy be aggressive and force that error by Dietz so Jay could get him in".
