Bret Saberhagen came through with a solid 9 innings and designated hitter Hal
McRae went yard and had 4 RBI at Tropicana Field as the Kansas City Royals
beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7 to 0.

McRae led the offense for Kansas City. He doubled knocking in a run in the
1st inning and rifled a three-run blast in the 3rd inning. Kansas City had
10 hits for the night. George Brett went 4 for 5 with 3 runs scored and John Mayberry added 2 RBI's.

Saberhagen(1-0) was credited with the shutout, allowing only 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8. Scott Kazmir(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs, 5 hits and 3 walks, and was knocked out after just 2 and 1/3 innings.

"Sabes was on top of his game tonight" said Royals skipper Dick Howser. "He had great command and was able to keep the Tampa batters off balance all night long."
