The Pittsburgh Pirates toppled the Birmingham Barons by a 6 to 2 score at
Rickwood Field.

Pittsburgh claimed the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 1 hit. The key offensive moment was provided by Willie Stargell who
quieted the crowd when he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his second of the year). Pie Traynor added his own two run homer (also his second of the season) in the fourth inning, and Honus Wagner lined one through a drawn in infield in the seventh to plate the last two Pirate runs. Josh Gibson blasted his second home run of the year in the bottom of the fourth to account for all of Birmingham's scoring. Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Birmingham 9 to 6.

The win was credited to Dock Ellis(1-0) who went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2
runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 5 walks (the Pirate defense turned numerous defensive gems behind Ellis, including three double plays). Max Manning(0-1) suffered the loss. He gave up 4 runs (only two earned) on 5 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.
