At Yankee Stadium, the New York fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel. Ben
Sheets(1-0) finally bested his New York opposite, Ron Guidry(0-1), by the
score of 3 to 1.

Sheets contributed a very nicely pitched game. He allowed only 1 unearned run on 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 2/3 innings while striking out 6. For the game Milwaukee out-hit New York 10 to 5.

Sheets got help from Ken Sanders and Rollie Fingers (Fingers earned his 2nd save is as many days). Guidry was hit with the loss. He pitched 7 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 10 hits and 1 walk while fanning 7.

Milwaukee's runs came in the third on RBI hits by Cecil Cooper and Gorman Thomas (Gorman's single drove in two runs). The lone Yankee run came on a bases loaded walk to Paul O'Neill. O'Neill had the chance to be the hero in the ninth with the tying and winning runs aboard, but Fingers coaxed Paulie to fly out to Thomas to end the game.
