Mark Loretta had 2 base hits as the San Diego Padres defeated the New York
Mets by a score of 5 to 2 at Shea Stadium.

Up until the sixth inning, the game had been a scoreless pitching duel between Sid Fernandez and Randy Jones. Loretta started the 6th inning rally with two out double. After Ken Caminiti was intentionally walked, "Cito" Gaston drew an unintentional walk. Then came the big moment, as Adrian Gonzalez deflated the mood of the partisan fans by blasting a Grand Slam homerun into the Mets bullpen (A-Gon's 1st of the season).

The Mets fought back in the bottom of the 6th inning, when Keith Hernandez hit a one out triple. After Cleon Jones couldn't hit a fly ball deep enough to score the run, Mike Piazza got "Mex" in-and himself-with a two run home run to left (his second), cutting the San Diego lead in half to 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, the Padres got an insurance run. Carlos Hernandez led off with a single to left. After Greene was retired, Randy Jones sacrificed the runner to second. Tony Gwynn got the run in with an opposite field single.

Randy Jones(1-2) got the win allowing 2 runs on 6 hits over 7 and 2/3 innings. Trevor Hoffman got the save, his 1st. Sid Fernandez(1-1) was given the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks, but one mistake-the grand slam homerun by Gonzalez-cost El Sid the game.

The New York Mets bested the San Diego Padres by a 5 to 2 score at Shea
Stadium, continuing their early season success while extending San Diego's futility. The Amazins are now 8-1 while the Pods are 1-8, as 55,088 happy fans cheered their Mets on to victory in their home opener.

New York claimed the early lead in the first inning scoring 2 runners on 3
hits. After two men were retired, Cleon Jones hit a hope down the left field line that just cleared the 338 sign for his first homerun of the season. After that, Darryl Strawberry singled. Carlos Beltran drew a walk. David Wright continued his early season clutch hitting, driving in the second run of the inning with a single to right field.

The Mets extended the lead in the bottom of the third. Cleon Jones drew a one-out walk. Strawberry then singled again, sending Jones to third. Beltran then hit a drive to right field, hoping to get a sacrifice fly. He got better than that, as the blow carried into the Mets bullpen for a three run homer (Beltran's 3rd, and the second against starter Andy Benes), giving New York a 5-0 lead after three.

San Diego had numerous opportunites throughout the night to score, but could only dent Cone in the fifth. Benes drew a one out walk. Tony Gwynn then doubled, etending his hitting streak to 7 straight games. While Mark Loretta was batting, third base umpire Angel Hernandez called a balk on Cone, as Benes was waved home. Loretta then punched a sac fly to right as Gwynn scored. The Padres stranded nine men on base, four of them in the first two innings. After the San Diego hafl of the fifth, neither team got on the socreboard again.

David Cone(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits in 8 innings while striking out 7. Jesse Orosco was perfect in one inning of relief and gained credit for his 2nd save. The loss was charged to Andy Benes(0-1). He pitched 6 innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits (2 of them homeruns) and 2 walks.

Bobby Valentine had this to say after the game: "We just wanted to give the Mets fans a taste of what this club did in the first eight games, and we did that tonight". As for the Padres, Bruce Bochy's post game conference was short and not very sweet, ending with "We can't fool around with these powerhouse teams like this...letting the game get away from us before we can get settled in".

we're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

Sorry about the break, but with the new Version 16 of the computer game coming out, I felt it would only be fair to those teams (primarily the Barons and ABCs) to wait until this new version came out-which gives teams the ability to use "double duty" players. These are players with both hitters and pitchers cards like Jose Mendez, Martin Dihigo, Brooks Kieschnick and the man for whom the module was named, "Double Duty" Radcliffe.

More games will begin shortly.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Dobie Moore robbed Cleon Jones of a base hit.

Big Bill Foster pitched a complete game and Rev Cannady hit 2 doubles at
Rickwood Field where the Birmingham Barons beat the New York Mets 3 to
2, ending the Mets season opening winning streak at seven. The Mets were the last MLB team to not have a loss on their record.

The game was won by Birmingham with a run in the 8th inning. Chino Smith
ripped a base-knock. Josh Gibson grounded out as Smith advanced to second. Mule Suttles was the next batter, but he struck out. John Beckwith then drew a walk. At that point, Mets manager Bobby Valentine relieved Koosman and brought in Bob Apodaca to face the right handed Cannady, but Rev was equal to the challenge, and doubled in the go ahead run. Birmingham totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.

Mike Piazza (1st) and Mule Suttles (3rd) exchanged solo homers in the 6th inning, the only long balls of the game for the two teams.

The victory was credited to Foster(2-0) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs on 6 hits, striking out 7 Mets. Jerry Koosman(1-1) took the loss. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 11 batters while allowing only 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.
