Dizzy Dean dominated striking out 12 Houston batters and Ozzie Smith had 2
base hits and 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Houston Astros by
a score of 8 to 5 at Minute Maid Field.

Dean(1-0) gave a fine effort for St. Louis. He surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks
in 7 innings and surrendered 3 homeruns. Smith keyed a 5 run eighth inning with a two run triple. Houston threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short as Craig Biggio, representing the tying run, flied out to center.

Dean got help from Bruce Sutter who earned his 1st save. Dave Smith(0-1) was
the loser in relief. Dean was asked about his big strikeout performance, and Diz, never at a loss for words, stated 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands, everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be able to take the crowd out of the game.'
