In one of the better games you will ever see, the Seattle Mariners defeated the Minnesota Twins in 17 innings at Safeco Field by a 5 to 4 score.

Each team used six pitchers in the game and had their last available man on the mound at the end-Joel Piniero for Seattle and Minnesota closer Joe Nathan.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine innings (the runs scoring in the bottom of the first on an Edgar Martinez double and in the top of the second on a Harmon Killebrew homer). Then the fun began as the game went to extra innings. In the 13th, it appeared as if the Twins had gained the upper hand as Justin Morneau blasted a leadoff homer off Kaz Sasaki-only to watch Nathan give it right back in the bottom of the 13th with two out as Alex Rodriguez unleased an "A-Bomb" to tie the game at 2.

In the 14th, the Twins went to work again, and this time came up with two runs on Rod Carew's double. But incredibly, the M's did it again in the bottom of the 14th, this time with solo HR's from the two Bradleys-Scott and Phil. The game was tied again, this time at 4-4.

Seattle finally came out the victor in the bottom of the 17th inning. After Raul Ibanez fanned to start the inning, Ken Griffey Jr., who had been 0 for 7 up to that point, blasted a solo shot to right-center giving Seattle the victory as those remaining from the announced crowd of 46,762 celebrated wildly. Both teams finished the game with 11hits.

Joel Pineiro(1-0) went 3 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Joe
Nathan(0-1) took the loss in relief as he had a severe case of "gopheritis", serving up 4 solo homeruns in his 4 and 1/3 innings of work. He did strike out nine, but left too many hittable fastballs over the plate.

"Wow, what a game!" said Seattle mamnager Lou Piniella afterwards, adding "I'm ready for another one!". Ken Griffey Jr., the man who ended the marathon, was clearly exhausted but happy after the game, stating "I'm just glad it's over; I could care less how it ended as long as we won."

Minnesota skipped Tom Kelly was not too pleased with his stopper, stating: "While I asked a lot of Joe today because he was the last man standing, he's got to close it out when we give him a lead-we did it twice and he gave it back twice. That won't get it done."

The last word came from Nathan, who added "The bottom line is this-if I can't get the job done, we don't deserve to win. It's that simple".
