Jose Rijo allowed 3 hits while blanking Washington as the Cincinnati Reds
defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 4 to 0 at Riverfront
Stadium. It was the second straight shutout for the Reds against the Nats.

Rijo(1-0) dominated Washington hitters. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and
3 walks in 9 innings while striking out 9. Cincinnati banged out 11 hits on the night, but was unable to dent Dennis Martinez until the bottom of the seventh, when Ted Kluszewski came up with the bases loaded against reliever Mel Rojas and "cleared 'em" with a three run double. Tony Perez drove "Klu" home later in the inning with one of his three hits on the day.

Martinez(0-1) was charged with the loss. He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings
and surrendered 9 hits and 1 walk. 'We didn't have a whole lot of chances
tonight,' Manny Acta said. 'Rijo just was too much for our guys.'
