Roy Campanella had 3 base hits and Dazzy Vance went the distance as the Los
Angeles Dodgers outscored the San Diego Padres 6 to 2.

Vance(1-0) put on a good performance. He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings while stiking out eight. Dazzy's only hiccup came in the San Diego fourth when Greg Vaughn hit a two run homer to account for all of the Padres scoring.

The Dodgers came right back in the bottom of the fourth with a two run blast from Adrian Beltre to tied the game at 2. In the fifth, L.A. went on top to stay, but it came at a price. After Vance had started the action with a double, Peavy nailed Jackie Robinson on the leg. The Dodger second baseman was unable to continue, and after the game was placed on the 15 day disabled list with a chipped kneecap. Davey Lopes will likely take Robinson's place at second and in the leadoff spot.

After Mike Sharperson came in to run for Robinson, it was up to Jackie's double play partner, Pee Wee Reese, who exacted "revenge" by slamming a three run homer to put L.A. up to stay. A sacrifice fly by Gil Hodges in the sixth ended the scoring. Los Angeles totaled 9 hits on the night.

Jake Peavy(0-1) ended up with the loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing all 6 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, with 2 of those hits leaving the yard.

"I didn't like that at all, the way Peavy hit Jackie after giving up a hit to the pitcher. That's dirty pool" stated Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda after the game was over. "There's still a lot of baseball left between our teams".

Peavy was contrite about the Robinson plunking, stating "the ball got away from me; I never like to see anyone get hurt like that", but Padre manager Bruce Bochy was ticked about Lasorda's reaction, stating "I can understand Tommy's frustration, but if they want to start playing beanball as a result of this, we'll fight fire with fire."

A note to Bochy-Don Drysdale, one of the more notorious "plunkers" of all time, is slated to start the finale for the Dodgers. Stay tuned.
