WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Dobie Moore robbed Cleon Jones of a base hit.

Big Bill Foster pitched a complete game and Rev Cannady hit 2 doubles at
Rickwood Field where the Birmingham Barons beat the New York Mets 3 to
2, ending the Mets season opening winning streak at seven. The Mets were the last MLB team to not have a loss on their record.

The game was won by Birmingham with a run in the 8th inning. Chino Smith
ripped a base-knock. Josh Gibson grounded out as Smith advanced to second. Mule Suttles was the next batter, but he struck out. John Beckwith then drew a walk. At that point, Mets manager Bobby Valentine relieved Koosman and brought in Bob Apodaca to face the right handed Cannady, but Rev was equal to the challenge, and doubled in the go ahead run. Birmingham totaled 10 hits on the afternoon.

Mike Piazza (1st) and Mule Suttles (3rd) exchanged solo homers in the 6th inning, the only long balls of the game for the two teams.

The victory was credited to Foster(2-0) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs on 6 hits, striking out 7 Mets. Jerry Koosman(1-1) took the loss. Despite taking the loss, he whiffed 11 batters while allowing only 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings.

Jose Reyes connected with a 'big fly' and had 3 RBI at Rickwood Field where
the red-hot New York Mets beat the Birmingham Barons by the score of 7 to
3.

Reyes provided the offensive punch. He tripled plating a run in the 2nd
inning and smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning. New York had 13 hits
for the night while Birmingham had 8.

The Amazins fell behind early, though, as the Barons came out hitting. The first five batter reached base safely, however, Birmingham ran themselves out of a really big inning by losing two runners on the basepaths. Art "Superman" Pennington and Josh Gibson drove in runs but Pennington and Chino Smith were gunned down by Met outfielders to limit the Barons to two runs in the first.

In the second, the Mets went to work on Dick "Cannonball" Redding. Darryl Strawberry started the action with a leadoff double, extending his hitting streak to six games. Carlos Beltran struck out, but David Wright singled in Strawberry to cut the Baron lead in half. Then came a crucial play. Todd Hundley singled to right. Smith, who had already committed one blunder, compounded the felony by throwing away the ball trying to gun down Wright at third. Mr. Wright scored the tying run while Hundley went to second. Jose Reyes then tripled in Hundley to give New York the lead, and "Doc" Gooden completed the second inning rally by connecting on a sacrifice fly. Birmingham did cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second with another Pennington RBI hit, but Willard Brown struck out with two on to end the rally.

Both pitchers settled down after that. The Barons had another chance to catch up in the bottom of the sixth after Smith started the inning with a walk and Gibson singled. Gooden bore down, however, fanning both Mule Suttles and Dobie Moore, and inducing an inning ending groundout from Rev Cannady to end the threat. The Barons would not threaten again.

Meanwhile, New York was not finished with their offense. In the seventh, Wright walked to start the inning. Hundley hit a grounder into the hole, but Cannady made a fine play to retire Hundley as Wright advanced to second. No matter-Reyes sent the Mets partisans present in the crowd of 46,104 into wild "Jose, Jose, Jose" chants with his first homerun of the year to right center field, giving New York a 6-3 lead.

The Mets wrapped up the scoring in the top of the eighth, now with Andy Cooper on the hill in relief after Redding was pulled for a pinch hitter. Cleon Jones led off with a triple. After a Straw strikeout, Beltran doubled down the left field line to score Jones. Wright then singled to left, but this time the Barons were equal to the task as "Cool Papa" Bell threw out Beltran at the plate.

The win went to Gooden(2-0) who allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in 8 innings, walking 3 while striking out 9. Roger McDowell finished up with a 1-2-3 ninth. Redding(0-1) was the loser.

New York continued their winning ways, with their streak now at 7 games and counting. 'We've really come alive lately,' Bobby Valentine said. 'We won some tough games and I feel real good about this ballclub right now, and hopefully we'll continue the roll we're on.'

Birmingham skipper Bruce Petway added, "This is one tough team. Everyone contributes, and I was most impressed with Gooden as he helped himself at the plate (2 for 3, sac fly, 1 RBI) as well on the mound".

The Baltimore Orioles toppled the Tampa Bay Rays by a 8 to 4 score at
Tropicana Field.

Baltimore tallied 6 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Frank Robinson who helped quiet the crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 3rd). Tampa Bay had 11 hits in the game while Baltimore had 8, but Baltimore had the more timely hits, including 3 home runs (Chris Hoiles (4th) and Melvin Mora (1st), in addition to F. Robinson).

The win was credited to Jim Palmer(1-1) who went 7 innings allowing 4 runs (all on homeruns by John Flaherty (1st) and Fred McGriff (2nd)).
Scott Kazmir(0-2) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs on 5 hits (2 homers) and 5 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

More bad news for the Rays-Grant Balfour was placed on the 15 day DL with a strained forearm after the game. Rays skipper Joe Maddon had no word at the post game press conference on Balfour's replacement, but did state that an announcement would be forthcoming tomorrow. He also added "in this division, we can't keep this up or we'll be buried by the end of April".

WEB GEMS- Bot 3rd: Vern Law robbed Mike Lieberthal of a base hit.

At Citizen's Bank Park the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the ice-cold
Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 4.

Roberto Clemente had a big day with his bat. He tripled plating a run in the 2nd inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 4th inning. Dave Giusti was perfect in relief in the ninth inning and gained credit for his 2nd save.

The victory was credited to Vern Law(1-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs. Steve Carlton(0-2) was charged with the loss. He was touched for 3 homeruns (Ralph Kiner (1st) and Craig Wilson (2nd), in addition to Clemente) in his 8 innings of work.

WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Bullet Joe Rogan robbed Carlos Beltran of a base hit.

Second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo slammed a homerun and had 3 RBI and Tom Seaver hurled a shutout with 10 strikeouts as the New York Mets man-handled the Birmingham Barons - the final score was 13 to 0.

The Mets ran rogshod over the Barons by producing with men in scoring position-New York went 6 for 14 and plated three other runs on bases loaded walks or sac flies, while Birmingham went 0 for 9, five of them being inning ending strikeouts.

The Mets began their Baron bashing in the third. Seaver drew a walk, and then Alfonzo followed with his fourth homerun of the year to give New York a 2-0 lead. The Mets continued their scoring in the fifth. Seaver again started the rally with a leadoff double. After Bullet Joe Rogan retired the next two batters, Darryl Strawberry doubled as Willard Brown's attempt at a wall catch was ruled a trap by umpire Jeff Kellogg. An intentional walk to Carlos Beltran followed, but David Wright burned the Barons by singling to right to drive in the fourth Met run.

The Mets put the Barons out of their misery in the eighth. David Wright led off with a single, then Todd Hundley was hit by a pitch. Jose Reyes drew a walk, ending Rogan's night. Tom Williams came on to relieve. He struck out Endy Chavez, but Seaver then burned Williams with his second double of the game to drive in two. Alfonzo singled to drive in another run. Williams then lost control of the plate, walking Keith Hernandez, Strawberry and Beltran in succession, the latter two forcing in two more runs. Wright then added his second hit of the inning to drive in two more runs. Martin Dihigo came on to relieve Williams, and Reyes ended the carnage with a sacrifice fly for the ninth Met run of the inning and the final 13-0 margin of victory.

Seaver(2-0) put on a good performance with clutch pitching, getting half of his 10 strikeouts to end innings-all with men in scoring position. He allowed no runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 5.40 to 2.30. New York finished with 12 hits in the victory.

Rogan(1-1) was given the loss. He gave up 7 runs on 8 hits and 5 walks in 7 innings. Williams was even worse, allowing 6 runs in just 1/3 of an inning on 3 hits and 3 walks. Dihigo was the only Baron pitcher not to be charged with a run, as he tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Seaver was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good command of all my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on-especially when I really needed it. I also liked the fact I was able to help myself today-I take pride in being a complete player, not just a pitcher'. Mets skipper Bobby Valentine was effusive in his praise for his ace, stating "My idea of managing is handing the ball to #41 and watching him work. After today, I may have to keep Tom available as a pinch hitter too".

The Barons locker room was not all gloom and doom though-Rogan had nothing but praise for his counterpart, stating, "That's the way to do it-throw a shutout and get some hits. I didn't have it today but maybe next time out I'll do the same thing". Batterymate Josh Gibson, who extended his hitting streak to all 6 games so far this season, added, "I guess that's why they call them the Amazins-they are on a roll now. I just hope someone, if not us, can stop them before their momentum turns into a runaway boulder and the NL East race becomes a fruitless chase".

Center fielder Hack Wilson went deep at Minute Maid Field as the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros by the count of 3 to 1.

Dick Ellsworth(1-0) earned his pay with a solid performance for Chicago. He allowed 7 hits and 5 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Houston stranded 11 runners on base as they failed countless times to bring runners home. Ellsworth got relief help from Lee Smith who was awesome in relief and gained credit for his 3rd save by striking out the side in the 9th.

Roy Oswalt(0-1) suffered the loss. 'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Ellsworth, 'I was just giving us a chance to win.'

Left fielder Stan Musial had 3 base hits and 5 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Colorado Rockies 7 to 5 at Coors Field.

St. Louis had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 4 hits. After an out was recorded, Willie McGee got things rolling when he delivered a single. McGee swiped second base. Ozzie Smith then laced a one-base hit, but Larry Walker threw out McGee at the plate, preserving the 5-5 tie for the moment. Smith took second on the throw. A balk was called with Rogers Hornsby batting, advancing "the Wizard of Oz" to third. Hornsby stepped back into the box and slapped a single to give the Cards the lead. Musial kept the rally going and tripled in Hornsby for his 5th RBI of the day. St. Louis finished with 14 hits in the victory.

Bruce Sutter(1-0) picked up the victory despite helping blow a 5-0 lead in the 8th inning, allowing 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning. Sutter got relief help from Lindy McDaniel, Steve Kline and Jason Isringhausen as "Izzy" gained credit for his 1st save. Steve Reed(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief.
